Radial Symmetry
4th grade
The students have been working on radial symmetry (when shapes and images are repeated evenly from the center outward). After creating these beautiful designs, they brought their laptops to class and visited the website http://snowflakes.barkleyus.com/. Here you can digitally cut your paper to create your symmetrical snowflake! They LOVED it! Fun project to end 2014!

Art Exhibit at the Craven County Public Library!
3rd graders Sarah Jane U. and Alison W. had their bird batiks on display for the Art Exhibit! The reception was October 28th and they came with their families! Everyone was super proud of them! We loved having Mrs. Lee there as well!

One of my FAVORITE projects EVER! BATIKS!
3rd grade is making birds & 4th grade is working on Fall images like pumpkins & leaves. True batiks are made using hot wax, fabric, and dye. Our version of the process is super fun! First we complete our drawing, then color HARD with crayon to create a waxy surface. Then they CRUMPLE up their work into a little ball!! They think I'm crazy when I tell them this! The crumpling creates cracks in the crayon wax. Then we paint the whole paper black. After painting, they wipe off the black paint with a paper towel. The black paint stays in the cracks and wipes off the crayon to create a batik!

New project on donorschoose.org ...
FULLY FUNDED!
I recently posted a project on donorschoose.org to get some new Art posters to create a word wall, and some desk resources to have as a visual aid for each student. It was totally funded in ONE DAY!! I will post pictures of the new materials as soon as I get them and can put them up. My project was funded by 9 different donors; a few from NC, and the rest from all over the country. How exciting!!!

HAPPY STUDENTS USING THE NEW DRYING RACKS!
3rd grade students made Drippy Monsters this week and learned about analogous colors. We used watered down tempera paint and straws to blow our paint around the paper to create our monsters! Then we started adding personality and details to them using cut construction paper. So much fun!!

Welcome Back!!
Welcome back to the Art room for the 2013-2014 school year! There are some new things around the classroom this year, and the students are loving discovering the new stuff. We have feet on the floor to line up at the sink, and a box for...ANYTHING! We can always use recycled materials for projects in the Art room, or items from the Wish List. If you'd like to volunteer in the Art room, please complete the volunteer information for AHB, and send me an email!
Looking forward to a great year!!

TWO New Drying Racks for AHB Art!
Recently I posted a project on DonorsChoose.org to try and get a new drying rack for our school. Due to their $ minimum your project needs to be, I asked for 2 new drying racks........ and the project was completely funded in ONE DAY! At the start of the school year two new drying racks just like the one you see to the left will be sent to AHB! I am excited for the kids and very thankful to the donors that made this wish come true. (I had posted the project on facebook and all the donors were family and friends of mine, which makes this that much more special for me!) The students are going to absolutely LOVE having these new drying racks, and that their projects won't drip on each other now! The project was listed at http://www.donorschoose.org/mleary if you would like to check it out, or any projects for other schools!
4th grade Perspective Trees
Theo M, 4th grade
Aren't these trees beautiful?! 4th grade students looked at artwork by current artist Anton Pavlenko. We talked about perspective and what techniques they can use to make things look closer or farther away, even if it's just on a flat piece of paper. With our tree paintings, we wanted to make it look like we were looking up into the treetops! I think they were very successful!

1st Grade Pinch Pots!
I think this was the happiest I have seen my 1st graders! Their pinch pots are out of the kiln from their glaze fire and they are ready to take home!! These belong to the students in Mrs. York's class, the rest of the students will take theirs home the day they have Art. I think they did an incredible job!
A.H. Bangert Yearbook
The yearbooks are in! I'm especially excited about this because the cover and all of the backgrounds for each grade level were created by students! I held a Yearbook Art Contest back in January/February and the winners got their drawings printed in the yearbook. Make sure you purchase one!
